With the Pandemic still halting all baseball operations, it’s time to get into some baseball talk. With the Red Sox losing one of the games brightest stars in Mookie Betts Its time to look at the future. In this post, we will evaluate some prospects in the Red Sox system. I will focus on pitching. Why The Red Sox Farm System Is Not As Bleak As Fans Realize Jay Groome Jay Groome was the team’s number one draft pick in 2016. Hampered by injuries Groome is slowly working his way back. Noted for his curveball, his fastball ranges in the mid too high 90’s. His third pitch is a changeup that has been clocked between86 and 88 mph. With his massive frame 6’5″ 2301bs he could possibly be a late_ season call up. Noted for his strong work ethic, the organization has been impressed with his progress.
Jarren Duran/Gilberto Jiminez cf Both prospects are blessed with superior athleticism. The edge goes to Duran. Although he does not hit for power, he is noted for his short sweet stroke. Will most likely be a spray hitter when he reaches the majors. Duran has the tools to be an everyday centerfielder. Gilberto Jiminez is the fastest player in the organization. Like Duran, he not hit for power. Being more of singles and doubles hitter, his unique speed will make him an offensive threat.
Noah Song Pitcher One of the most promising pitchers in the organization. Noah Song was drafted 4th in the 2019 draft out of the Naval academy. With his wide frame 6’3″ 200lbs Songs fastball clocks between 95-97. In Lowell, last season Song finished with a 1.06 ERA in 17 total innings pitched. If Song can stay healthy he could be a top of the rotation starter by 2022. The last starter developed by Boston was John Lester. Tanner Houck pitcher Tanner Houck is another I testing prospect. With excellent size6’3″ 220 lbs Houck is projected to be a reliever. His three bread and butter pitches are the slider and fastball. In three years Houck has progressed well compiling 15-20 wins and losses and a 4.06 ERA. If the season is salvaged Houck could make his way to Fenway in September.
The Pandemic If and when baseball returns, the Red Sox have their work cut out for them. With Toronto and the Yankees getting betting the organization may have to count on their farm system to keep them competitive.
