Three Quality Relievers That The Red Sox Will Target At The Trade Deadline

With  Major League baseball’s 2019 All _Star game in the books, the Red Sox find themselves in second place nine games behind the Yankees. The difference this year, compared to last season, has been the pitching. In this post, we will review three relievers that may be available at the trade deadline.                                                                                                                                                                            Three Quality Relievers That The Red Sox  Will Target At The Trade Deadline                                                                                                                                                                            Brad Brach Orioles Like his former teammate Zach Britton, Brach could be the next Oriole on the chopping block.  The catch with Brach is he is under contract through next season at 9,000,000. Which means the Red Sox would have him for a year and a half.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                          Red Sox fans can recall that five years ago, the team sent Andrew Miller to Baltimore and in return the club receiver Eduardo Rodriguez. Rodriguez has developed into one of the clubs most dependable starters.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                   Joakim Soria Soria is another candidate who could be dealt for the right price. Boston traded with Chicago three years ago that netted Chris Sale. Soria is a veteran who owed 10,000,000 dollars for next season.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                        The White Sox of 2019 is vastly improved. It would take a quality prospect or two to acquire Soria. Soria brings value to a club fighting for a playoff spot. He has been both a setup man and reliever during his career. Despite a 1-4 record and a 4.75 ERA this year, he has 220 career saves.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                         Adam Conley Marlins With the Marlins once again basement dwellers, they will be a team moving players. One player, in particular, pitcher Adam Conley. Conley is flexible who can either start or relieve and would be a perfect fit for the Red Sox.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                          At 1-7 and a 774 ERA this season Conley would add depth to a starting rotation or bullpen.

The Second Half The Red Sox starting pitching has been a disappointment. Chris Sale and Rick Porcello have not received the run support needed to win.

The organization has begun preliminary talks with the Mets, regarding starter Zach Wheeler. Wheeler is 6-6 and a 4.69 ERA in 2019. The other suitor is the Yankees. With the Red Sox farm system razor_ thin look for GM Brian Cashman to obtain Wheeler’s services.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                   The Red Sox lost big shoes in losing Joe Kelly and Crag Kimbrel. Plus the injury to Nathan Eovaldi hasn’t helped. Look for GM Dave Dombrowski to make a move or two at the deadline.

The Four Teams That Will Be Fighting It Out For The 2019 American League Playoffs

With the 2019 Major League Baseball season underway here is a projection of which teams will be fighting it out in October. The 2018 Boston Red Sox are frontrunners to repeat. In this post, we will examine which team’s will be standing in Oct

Four Teams That Will Be Fighting It Out For The 2019 American League Playoffs

1st Place AL East Boston’ The World Champions had a relatively quiet offseason. General Manager Dave Dombrowski resigned World Series MVP  Steve Pearce. and starter Nathan Eovaldi.  As of last week, the organization  rewarded ace Chris Sale with a five _year contract extension

Bullpen _wise, closer Craig Kimbrel still remains a free agent.   As it stands now, the opening day closer remains veteran righthander Matt Barnes.

Offensively; Offensively the team will open the season with the same lineup as last season. Overall, in 2018 the team finished 6th in the league in home runs /208 and 1st in every other department. The only change in the lineup is catcher Sandy Leon who was released in spring training.     Wild Card Yankees; The Yankees had a successful 2018 season winning 100 games. In 2018 the Yankees landed the biggest free agent fish n Giancarlo Stanton. Apparently, Stanton was not enough as the team lost to Boston in round one of the playoffs.

This offseason the Yankees were one of the busiest in baseball. The club acquired Seattle southpaw James Paxton. Resigned JA Haap and Zach Britton. Also coming to terms were infielder Troy Tulowitzki, Outfielder Andrew McCutcheon, Infielder DJ LaMahieu pitchers Lace Lynn and Gio Gonzalez.       The Yankees will be serious challengers to the Red Sox as the club added depth to their 2019 roster. One thing is for certain they will be active at the trade deadline.

AL Central Minnesota; This may seem a long shot but the Twins are committed to winning. First_year manager  Rocco Baldelli takes a team that finished in third place a year ago with visions of a championship.

In the offseason, the Twins added CJ Cron, Nelson Cruz, and infielder Johnathan Schoop. With an established pitching staff and deep bullpen look for the club to be the surprise of the American League.

Offensively the Twins have a talented group of Max Kepler, MIguel Sano, and outfielder Byron Buxton. Despite Joe Mauer, retiring Twins fans have high hopes for a serious championship run.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                             AL West Houston Astros;  The Astros won five games less than the Red Sox in2018 finishing 103-59 and a 636 winning percentage. Considering the fact that they lost starter Charlie Morton to Tampa Bay, they still have an intriguing pitching staff. Justin Verlander and Gerrit Cole give the Astros a reliable one and two punch.  Collin McHugh and Brad Peacock round out the staff. As for depth, the club has two studs ready in the minors. Youngsters Josh James and Forrest Whitley should join the staff at some point

Peacock rounds out the staff. Depth_ wise, the team has two young studs in the minors. Youngsters Josh James and Forrest Whitley will be recalled at some point during the season.

The organization announced that they had resigned pitcher Justin Verlander and third baseman Alex Bregman to contract extensions. Despite losing Marwin Gonzalez in free agency, they still have plenty of punch with Jose Altuve and George Springer

Reshaping The Red Sox Roster For the 2019 Season

Now that the Red Sox have wrapped up their fourth world championship in fifteen years it’s time to look ahead to next year. Pitching is the first issue that General Manager Dave Dombrowski needs to address this offseason. In this post, we will examine three areas that the organization reshape for the 2019 season.

Reshaping The Red Sox Roster for the 2019 season

Addressing The Pitching; The first order of business is to address the pitching staff. Currently, the team has three free agent pitchers that they need to make a decision on. Relievers Craig Kimbrel, Joe Kelly and Nathan Eovaldi are all free agents. Eovaldi finished the year with an impressive 6-7 record and a 3.81 ERA  after being acquired from Tampa. Eovaldi proved to be a horse in the postseason but maybe too expensive for the organization to resign.

As for Joe Kelly and Nathan Eovaldi look for the club to move on from both closer Craig Kimbrel and Nathan Eovaldi The team could use Kelly as the eighth inning man and promote setup man  Ryan Brasier to take over the closer’s role. In the starting pitching area,  the club may think of trading Rick Porcello and his 21,000,000  a year salary.

Depending on what direction the team goes in look for the Red Sox to be conservative this offseason. Suitable starters who would be a nice fit are Dallas Keuchel or Brett Anderson of Oakland.   Charlie Morton of the Astros would be a nice piece if the price is right.                                                                                  Regarding the bullpen department, attractive relievers are Tony Sipp of Houston. Cody Allen Of Cleveland. Also, Andrew Miller could be a possibility for the right situation.

Added depth; Aside from Brock Holt the team could use an extra role player or two. Holt who played a key role in the playoffs is the teams super sub. Some players who are free agents are Austin Jackson of Cleveland, John Jay Of Arizona.   During the season Dombrowski signed Brandon Phillips. Phillips became an instant leader in the clubhouse after being recalled from Pawtucket.  Depending on second baseman  Dustin Pedroia’s progress from knee surgery second base will be an issue that needs to be addressed.

Possible Trades; Whenever a team wins a total of 119 games fans are more than satisfied. First_ Year manager Alex Cora was one of three managers to win a World Series as a rookie manager. Look for the organization to have a quiet offseason and maintain the intensity they showed in the playoffs.                                                                                                                                                                                           The Future;  The club has so far received a commitment from David Price and signed Steven Pearce to a one year Deal. Pearce was obtained midway through the season and was named World Series MVP.

Time For The Red Sox Pitching Staff To Step It Up

With game one of the ALDS scheduled tonight, it’s time for the Red Sox pitching staff to step it up. Although the team had a franchise high of 108 wins, in 2018 this is where the players earn their salary In this post, we will review three areas why the pitching staff needs to step it up.                                                                                                                                                                                                                  Time For The Red Sox Pitching staff to Step It Up                                                                                                                                                                                                                                         Eliminated by Houston The Past Two Years;   Although the organization  enjoyed a franchise record of 108 wins, no postseason series celebrations the past two years. The past two seasons the team has gone down in defeat at the hands of the Astros.                                                                                                                                    With free _agent signee, David Price and Chris Sale winless in a postseason series the pressure are on the team and first_ year manager Alex Cora to deliver a playoff series victory If the organization fails to get past the Yankees in round one General Manager Dave Dombrowski’s job may be in jeopardy.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                  Red Sox Pitching Versus The Yankees, Astros and Indians;  In contrast to the Yankees, Indians, and Astros The Red Sox bullpen ranked 4th in the American League with 50 saves and a 3.75 staff ERA. Closer Craig  Kimbrel  5-1 2.74 ERA and 42 saves is the games best.                                                                                          The Indians bullpen of Cody Allen, Neil  Ramirez, and Andrew Miller are tough to beat on any given night. Houston’s Ken Giles and Roberto Osuna are one of the best in the game.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                       As for the starting pitching, all four teams are highly talented  Overall the edge goes to the Astros with the starting staff of Justin Verlander, Gerrit Cole, Dallas Keuchel and Charlie Morton Bostons David Price, Chris Sale, and Rick Porcello have not won in the postseason throughout their careers.                                                                                                                                                                                                     Level of Talent Compared to last season the Red Sox is better with the additions of JD Martinez, Stephen Pearce, Ian Kinsler, Brandon Phillips and pitcher Nathan Eovaldi.  The key for a successful postseason is to play smart and aggressive.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                        Decisions After PostSeason ; Regardless of the outcome of the postseason decisions could be made on Red Sox General Manager Dave Dombrowski. Although the team has qualified for the playoffs three years in a row, the organization’s farm system has very few highly ranked prospects.

Why The Red Sox Bullpen Will Determine Their Post Season Success

With three weeks left in the 2018 Major League Baseball season, pitching will decide the outcome of the Red Sox success. The starting pitching has been spectacular. But it will be the bullpen that will determine the Red Sox success In this post, we will review three reasons why the bullpen will be a key factor.

Why The Red Sox Bullpen Will determine Their Post Season success

Depth In The Pitching department

Considering the pitching has been spectacular, they have also been getting quality starts from their fourth and fifth starters. Both Brian Johnson and Hector Velazquez have pitched respectably in the absence of Eduardo Rodriguez.

It’s depth like this that have contributed to the teams best season ever. If the club can continue to get valuable performances from their back _end, then the pressure will help the pitching as the club heads into September.

A  healthy Chris Sale

Chris Sale has been on the Disabled list since August 3rd with shoulder inflammation. Recently Sale has been throwing on the sidelines and is expected to return in September

Sale 12-3  had pitched superbly before going on the disabled list. Since then the club has been getting valuable contributions from Nathan Eovaldi, Brian Johnson and Hector Velazquez.

Getting contributions like this that has propelled the team to the best record in franchise history.  Righthander Nathan Eovaldi acquired at the trade deadline, has provided a considerable boost for manager Alex Cora.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                           E

Exceptional Closer

Along with having a deep bullpen the organization has one of the best closers in the game in Craig Kimbrel. Kimbrel 4-1 37 saves is one of the teams most valuable players.

A club that has a Craig Kimbrel has an advantage. If the Red Sox expect to win in the post_ season, then Kimbrel will be a key factor.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                         The Stretch Run                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                The season of 2018 has been a historic one to say the least. The club is on it’s to a 110 win season, With new additions JD Martinez the post season will be very exciting.

Why Ian Kinsler Is An Upgrade For The Red Sox

Now that the Major League trade deadline has passed Red Sox fans should be happy, as the club traded for veteran infielder Ian Kinsler. The organization obtained Kinsler for two minor league prospects.

. In Kinsler, the club gets a quality replacement for the injured Dustin Pedroia. In this post, we will examine three areas why the Red Sox needed offense over relief pitching.

Why Ian Kinsler Is An Upgrade For The Red Sox

Upgrade Defensively
Since the injury to Dustin Pedroia, the team has been shuffling Eduardo Nunez and Brock Holt at second.  In Kinsler, the club is getting a thirteen_ year veteran. Kinsler who has a career batting average of 272 has 247 home runs and 871 runs batted in.. Defensively he has a 981 fielding percentage over a span of 8400 chances. Playing in1,719 games Kinsler is still a quality everyday player.

Compared to Pedroia the two are similar in their style of play. Kinsler was a seventeenth round pick in 2002 while Pedroia was drafted by Boston the following year. With Pedroia out with a knee injury, the Red Sox are getting a player who the fans will hopefully appreciate like they did Pedroia.  All factors considered Kinsler is a  quality upgrade over substitutes Brock Holt and Eduardo Nunez.

   Strong Bullpen

General Manager Dave Dombrowski did not add any new arms to assist the bullpen. The club has been getting substantial contributions from All _Star closer Craig Kimbrel.

In addition to Kimbrell Boston has been getting valuable contributions from Matt Barnes3-3-3.57, Heath Hembree 4-1 3.65, Joe Kelly 3-0 1.57, Ryan Brasier, and Tyler Thornburg.

                                                                                                                                                                            Stretch Run

Since opening day 2018 General Manager Dave Dombrowski has been very proactive in improving the team’s roster. The club acquired veteran first baseman Steve Pearce from Toronto. Late last week the team traded for Ray’s pitcher righthander Nathan Eovaldi. In Eovaldi’s first start he shutout the Tigers on 82 pitches.

With the best record in baseball at 75-34, Boston needs to get dependable pitching from its starters. With Chris Sale and Eduardo Rodriguez on rehab, every start is crucial. If the team hopes to achieve success in the postseason, then it all comes down to the pitching.

Survival Of The Fittest How The Red Sox Compare To The Rest Of The League Going Forward In 2018

It’s another exciting summer of Baseball in Boston. The classic showdown against the Yankees is starting to eat up as the summer of 2018 begins. And wouldn’t you know it despite a first _place standing The Red Sox management drops a bombshell? Friday morning the club announced that they have designated first baseman Hanley Ramirez for assignment. In this post, we’ll review three areas that the Red Sox need to focus in going forward if they hope to reclaim the AL East crown                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                        Survival Of The Fittest How The Red Sox Compare To The Rest of The League Going Forward In 2018

Strong Bullpen;                                                                                                                                            Comparing the Red Sox bullpen to the rest of the American League teams the club has one of the best in the league, Closer Craig Kimbrel continues to dominate other closers with 14. Along with Joe Kelly, Matt Barnes Heath Hembree and Hector Velazquez have been lights out.                                                            Out of the three divisional teams, the Red Sox have the toughest bullpens with Kimbrel leading the way followed by the Yankees with ten saves, the Indians with nine saves and Houston with 12 saves. As long as Kimbrel is fresh and healthy the club can be a serious contender.                                                                                                 Starting Pitching;

So far in 2018 the Red Sox starting pitching of David Price, Chris Sale and Rick Porcello has been strong. Swingman Drew Pomeranz has been struggling while Eduardo Rodriguez has been splendid.   As for the Yankees, their starting pitching has also been solid led by Luis SeverinoOverall the Yankees are a game behind Boston with a 31-18 and a 3.18Only the Astros team ERA is better with a combined total of 2.39The Indians are 24-24 heading into Memorial Day weekend with a team ERA of 3.99

Why the Red Sox Will Go As Far As the Pitching Will Take Them In 2018

There’s an old saying in baseball that a team will go as far as it’s pitching. This can be applied to the 2018 Red Sox. If David Price can resurrect and pitch like Davis Price then they should be ok. Also if the bullpen can be dependable then the team should qualify for the postseason. In this article,  we’ll discuss three areas which will determine the team success.

Why the Red Sox Will Go as Far As the  Pitching will take them in2018                                                                                                                                                                                                The Price Factor;                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                               If there’s any hope of postseason in2018 a lot hinges on the health of David Price.  Midway through last season Price came back and proved to be a very effective coming out of the bullpen. Regaining his old form could determine  who will win the AL East in 2018.  With managers cutting down on the starters innings, the team should be ok.                                                                                                       Coupled with a dependable bullpen the Sox should be serious contenders all season long.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                            The Stanton Factor,                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                             This year’s free agency market saw a huge demand for relief pitchers. The Yankees however, snagged the biggest fish of anyone by signing Giancarlo Stanton.   Stanton and Aaron Judge could combine for over 100 homer uns. The Yankees are gambling heavily on power over pitching.                                                                                                                                                                                                                         Also, the Angels were active by signing Japanese phenom Shohei Otani  Both teams spent money on power rather than pitching.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                   Skillful Managing;                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                             With both teams having first _year managers a lot _depends on their decision making.  Like Alex Cora Yankee skipper Aaron Boone have no managerial experience. Both will be under heavy scrutiny if either one of the teams doesn’t perform.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                 This season should be very interesting for both teams. Each is extremely talented .But with two rookie managers, the outcome may not only be determined by pitching or power but which manager makes the right decision.
